Melting point 122.13 ℃, boiling point 249.2 ℃, relative density (15/4 ℃)1.2659. The appearance is white acicular or scaly crystal. Sublimation occurs above 100 ℃. Slightly soluble in cold water, hexane, hot water, ethanol, , chloroform, benzene, carbon disulfide and turpentine, etc.

Benzoic acid is shiny, white, monoclinic, lamellar or acicular. Light weight, odorless or slightly similar to benzoin or benzaldehyde odor. Its vapor is very irritating, easy to cause coughing after inhalation. Can evaporate with water vapor. Sublimation begins at about 100 ℃. 1 g of benzoic acid is dissolved in 2.3 mL of cold ethanol, 1.5 mL of boiled ethanol, 4.5 mL of chloroform, 3 mL of , 3 mL of , 30 mL of carbon tetrachloride, 10 mL of benzene, 30 mL of carbon disulfide, 23 mL of turpentine. Solubility in water increases with the presence of alkaline substances such as borax and trisodium phosphate.
